    Paging through the latest incarnation of UNCLE JOHN’S BATHROOM READER, it’s amazing that those folks have been unearthing mounds of fresh, new trivia for 24 years now! UNCLE JOHN’S 24-KARAT GOLD BATHROOM READER is yet another doorstop-sized collection of weird and wonderful bathroom reading, topping out at 544 pages. Compared to the 1988 edition, the price has gone up – from $11.95 to $18.95 – but, whatever the cost, this is yet another must-have title for trivia buffs.

    Version #24 retains the patented BR brief reads, two-three page medium reads, long articles and multi-part features format. Why change a winning format?

    Among the treats to be found are:

    Obscure 1960s Fads;
    Odd Baseball Stories;
    Familiar Phrases;
    Modern Contenders for the Title of “8th Wonder of the World;”
    Fabulous (Product)Flops;
    Judges Gone Wild;
    Nasty Musician (Quotes);
    People Who Did Surgery on Themselves;
    Colorful Horse Racing Terms;
    Strange Lawsuits;
    (a two-parter) History of Tupperware;
    Bill Murray Stories; and
    (People) Famous for How They Died.

    I enjoy Bathroom Readers because they’re entertaining and educational. I had no idea, for instance, that Helen Keller and Anne Sullivan performed in vaudeville. Likewise, I knew little about the Hawaiian island of Niihau until I read #24’s informative two-parter of that odd little place. And, while I’ve heard of President Nixon’s “Enemies List,” I hadn’t seen it till I found UNCLE JOHN’S 24-KARAT BATHROOM READER seven-page article on it.

    In any case, trivia buffs now have the annual fix and it was worth the wait. Lots of info, lots of fun. Recommended.

    Like most of the “Bathroom Reader” books this one is loaded with all sorts of short articles, trivia, quizzes and more. It is not so focused as the “Bathroom Reader Plunges Into…” books and, instead, features a wide range of information about dozens of items and events. I have many of the “Uncle John” books and I think this is one of the most interesting of the series.

    These books are fun to read. I have been giving them as Christmas gifts to family friends for years, and they are always elated to receive them. Great books!
